Primary careers education

It's never too early to start thinking about the type of career or job you would like to do when you leave school.

Every day you will see people doing different jobs, for example:

  • your teachers
  • school caretaker
  • swimming pool life guard
  • shop assistants
  • police men and women
  • sport club leaders
  • waiters and waitresses

The difference between a job and a career

A career is made up of a collection of all the different jobs you do throughout your life. For example your career might start as a classroom assistant in a school and then progress to being a teacher, then a head teacher.

There are many different career areas, for example:

  • finance (banks)
  • hospitality (hotels and restaurants)
  • farming
  • manufacturing (building and 'making' things)
  • medical (doctors and nurses)

Your career might be made up of jobs from different career areas.

Finding out about different careers and jobs

At primary school you will learn about and see people doing lots of different careers and jobs.

Find out more by asking your parents, friends and relatives:

  • to tell you about what they do when they are at work
  • what different jobs they have done before doing their current jobs
  • whether they had to take exams and tests to do their job
  • whether they went university to help them get into their career area

At secondary school you will learn a lot more about careers and jobs so don't worry and just have fun asking questions.
