Who owns registration numbers

Registration numbers are the property of the Government of Jersey.

However, the Inspector of Motor Traffic may allow the exchange or retention of registration numbers in certain circumstances.

Keep a registration number

Registration numbers can be retained at anytime, including when the vehicle is being:

  • permanently exported
  • scrapped
  • sold

As the registered owner of a vehicle you can retain the use of a registration number for £101.50 per 6 month period.

If the registration number is granted to a different person, the initial retention fee is £117.50.

To retain your registration number you need to:

Send the completed documents to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) or you can deliver them in person.

You can pay by card, cash or cheque (payable to the Treasurer of the States). Do not send cash in the post.

Exchange registration numbers

To exchange registration numbers both registered owners will have to complete the application for the exchange, retention, change or withdrawal of a motor vehicle registration mark.

They'll need to deliver the completed form together to DVS with the vehicles' original registration documents (VRD1) and pay £203.

You can pay by card, cash or cheque (payable to the Treasurer of the States).
