Changing your vehicle's registration details

You must make all changes to vehicle registration particulars by completing the relevant sections on the vehicle registration document (VRD 1).

Once you have completed the relevant sections, you should deliver the registration document (VRD 1) to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS). We must receive the  document within 7 days.

Transferring ownership

If you have bought or sold a vehicle or changed ownership, the following must be completed:

  • the current owner must sign declaration boxes 2 and 4 on the rear of the registration document (VRD 1) and deliver part B to DVS
  • the new owner must sign declaration boxes 1 and 3 on the rear of the registration document (VRD 1) and deliver part A to DVS

Transferring ownership following the owner's death

If the registered owner of the vehicle has died and has a will, you'll need a grant of probate to transfer ownership. This allows someone to administer the personal property (moveable estate) held in Jersey for someone who has died.

If there's no valid will, you'll need a grant of letters of administration.

Probate and letters of administration

To transfer ownership the executor or administrator of the estate will need to complete the process in points 1 and 2 above. As executor if transferring to yourself then you will need to sign all 4 boxes.

You'll need thse additional documents to complete the transfer:

  • Grant of probate or Letters of Administration (original or certified true copy)
  • Photographic Identification

Changing vehicle details

If you change any of the vehicle details shown on the front of your registration document (VRD 1), including new paint colour or change of engine size, you need to:

  • complete section 3 of part A on the rear of the document, noting the changes to the vehicle details
  • sign declaration box 1
  • deliver the document to DVS

If a new or replacement engine has been fitted, you'll also need to provide us an invoice or proof of the engine's origin.

Permanently exporting or scrapping a vehicle

If you're exporting or scrapping or breaking up your vehicle, you need to:

  • complete the relevant boxes in section 2 of part A on the rear of VRD 1
  • sign declaration box 1
  • deliver the document to DVS

Changing your address or name

If you still own the vehicle but need to change the address on your VRD 1 or your name, if you got married for example, you need to:

  • complete section 1 of part A on the rear of the document by filling in your new name or address
  • sign declaration box 1
  • send the document to DVS with evidence of your change of circumstances, a copy of your marriage certificate for example

Replacement registration document

If you need a replacement vehicle registration document you must complete a VRD 3 form. Once your form is complete, you can email it to DVS, send it by post or deliver it in person.
