You won't need to set up a digital ID (Yoti) or activate your onegov account if you did this last year.
Setting up your onegov account for the first time
You'll need to activate your
onegov account, which includes setting up your Government digital ID (Yoti) before you file your tax return.
There are a number of steps to creating your digital ID and signing up for a onegov account, but it only has to be done once.
Make sure you have all your paperwork you need to complete the return before you start.

- a valid Jersey passport or a valid identity document from another country
- a smartphone

When you cannot file online

|Yoti app not downloading on my smartphone||Yoti works on:|
- Android version 21 (Lollipop) and above
- iPhone 5S and above (software support iOS 10, 11 and 12)
If your smartphone is older than these specifications you won't be able to download the app and use digital id to activate a onegov account.

|Face not scanning||Find an area with good lighting, hold your phone at eye level, keep your face in the frame and make sure you're the only person in the frame.|

|Passport not scanning||If you are taking a picture of the passport make sure it is flat and you are in an area with good lighting.|

|Don't have a valid passport||If you don't have a valid Jersey passport, you can't use a Jersey driving licence, but Yoti does accept driving licences and ID documents from other countries.|
If you have a different valid identity document, select the country it is issued by in the 'add document' menu of the Yoti app. It will appear on the list of documents if it can be accepted by Yoti.

|Confirmation code email from Yoti not received||Check your junk or spam email folder. Also, make sure you have typed your email correctly.|

|Recovering your Yoti account|
If you've deleted the app or have a new phone, download the Yoti app again and select the 'Already have an account' option and enter your username and PIN.
You don't need to register again if you have already created your account recovery file.

Onegov account troubleshooting
|Creating a onegov account||To activate your onegov account using your phone go to the one.gov.je log in page, select 'Activate your onegov account', select the 'Use Yoti' button and follow the instructions on the Yoti app.|
To activate your onegov account using a different device, go to the
one.gov.je log in page, select 'Activate your onegov account', scan the QR code with your Yoti app, click 'Yes continue' to share your details and then click 'Send'.
|Logging into your onegov account|
To log into your onegov account using your phone, go to the one.gov.je log in page, select ‘Log in using Yoti’ and follow the instructions.
We don’t recommend that you complete your tax return on your phone because the online form is not optimised for a small screen.
To log into your onegov account on a different device, go to the
one.gov.je log in page, select ‘Log in using Yoti’, scan the QR code with your Yoti app, click 'Yes continue' to share your details and then click 'Send'
|Security check message displayed||In some cases we can't automatically match your details so we need to do this manually. You'll be contacted once this is complete.|
We deal with these as quickly as we can.
|QR code not scanning||The QR code on your screen expires after a short period of time. Refresh the page or refresh the Yoti QR code and rescan the QR code.|
If it still won't scan it might be because you're in 'private browser' or 'incognito'. If you are, change to non-private browsing and try again.
|'You must be over 16 to register' activation error message displayed||You must be over 16 to register for a onegov account, if you're not you won't be able to proceed.|
|'Oops there was a problem' error message displayed||Your session may have timed out. To retry, go back to the
one.gov.je log in page and try again.|
Alternatively, you can also close your web browser down, reopen it and navigate back to the one.gov.je page and try again.
If your still unable to access your account contact customer services with your full name, including any middle names, your date of birth and contact number and we'll help you.
|'It looks like your digital ID has already been activated' error message displayed|
You'll get this message if your digital ID is already activated.
It could be that your YOTI account is inactive. We can reactivate your digital ID (YOTI) but you'll need to
email customer services with your full name, including any middle names, your date of birth and your contact number and we'll help you.
Online tax return troubleshooting
|Tax return not saved as expected||When you save your return you'll be automatically sent an email with a link in it. When you come back to complete the form make sure you access it by clicking on the link in the email. Alternatively click on the history tab on your onegov account.|
Don't go back to the saved form by using the 'Personal income tax return' link on your onegov account because it will start the return again and you'll lose your previous progress.
|We've been unable to match you with a Tax Identification Number (TIN) message displayed||If you're the primary taxpayer please contact Revenue Jersey on +44 (0) 1534 440300. You'll need to give us your title, full name including any middle names, date of birth, JY number and an email to contact you.
We deal with these as quickly as we can.
If you're not the primary taxpayer you can't complete the online return.
|Completing someone else's tax return|
You can't complete the return for someone else.
You can only complete your return as the 'primary taxpayer' using the identity you logged in with.

|Reviewing the return before submitting it|
To review what you've entered use the 'back' button at the bottom left hand side of each page.
Once you have submitted the return you can download a pdf and you can also see a history of all your forms under the history tab of your onegov account.
|Can't see all the information entered||Some sections in the form (for example property income) are too large to display in a simple view. These boxes have a scroll bar underneath which you can move left to right to see all the information.|
|Nowhere to add extra comments||The tax return has been designed to gather all the information we need to assess your tax with most cases going through automatically without an officer review. If you need to tell us anything else, send it separately to Revenue Jersey. |
Married and civil partnership filing information
If you're married or in a civil partnership, the primary taxpayer is responsible for filing the return and declaring the income for both people.
If you got married or entered into a civil partnership during the year the primary taxpayer is responsible for declaring their spouse's or partner's income from the date of marriage or civil partnership.

If you're filing a corporate tax return you need to register for corporate return online filing.

Completing your return correctly
You should have all your tax paperwork to hand when you complete your return. This may include:
- pension advice letters
- receipts for tax deductible expenses
- bank statements
- loan interest certificates
- your child's social security number
- childcare certificates
You don't submit the paperwork with your return, but you should keep it for 6 years in case you're asked to supply the supporting information.
Checking your return
All your income and claims for deductions or allowances must be true, complete and correct.
Before you submit your return check the following:
- you've completed the section about residency correctly
- you've ticked the box if you're married or in a civil partnership and claiming the married / civil partnership exemption threshold
the income you are declaring is correct (for example if you're employed your taxable income should be the same as the gross taxable income figure on your payslips)
you've declared all your taxable income (for example in addition to employment income you also had income from renting a room in your own home)
- you're only claiming expenses that you are entitled to claim (for example if you're self-employed don't claim for anything which is for your own personal use and therefore not a business expense)
you're only claiming allowances you are entitled to claim (for example if you're claiming child allowance you have a child you're entitled to claim)
Complete your return carefully. If you have been careless or deliberately concealed income from us you will get a penalty.
