Organising a beach clean
Anyone can clean a beach in Jersey.
If you're organising a group of people to clean a beach you need to check the
Policing Of Beaches (Jersey) Regulations 1959 as you may need permission. If you do need permission email edgroup@gov.je. You should inform the parish or parishes so that the duty
Centeniers are aware of your event.
If you're organising a public event you may need to ask consent from the Bailiff by email to bailiffschambers@gov.je. If your beach cleaning event is not open to the general public then you don't need permission.
You need to carry out a risk assessment for the activity. You must also check the tides times for the date you're planning your beach clean.
Your risk assessment may also need to include:
- supervising children and getting parental permission
- monitoring the weather
- preventing sunburn or hypothermia
- preventing accidents and incidents
- first aid
Remember, dogs must be on a lead between 10.30am and 6pm between 1 May and 30 September.

Equipment
You do not need any special equipment to clean a beach. You only need something to put the litter in but most people use gloves.
You'll need a first aid kit and access to some fresh drinking water.
It's unlikely that you would find any sharp objects when you're cleaning a beach. But it's a good idea to get a sharps box for the event just in case. You can get a sharps box from a pharmacy.
Getting rid of the litter you collect
Before you clean the beach you can email dfi@gov.je so they know there may be extra litter to collect. They'll need to know your start and end point and where you'd like the litter collected from.
If you're separating recyclable litter you'll need to take that away for recycling.

There are many organisations who can help you with your beach clean. Most will check the litter found and will keep records. We can put you in touch with organisations.
